Subjective Assessment of the Spatial Attributes of Reproduced Sound

نویسنده

چکیده

Sound systems delivering enhanced Spatial reproduction compared with conventional two-channel stereo demand appropriate subjective testing techniques to assess their performance. Sound quality assessment methods of the past 30 years have been mainly concerned with attributes other than spatial, concentrating primarily on timbral and distortion issueswhen assessingthe qualitiesof loudspeakersor lowbit-ratecodecs.Spatialattributes,consideredan important contributor to overall reproduced sound quality, can be determined by a variety of experimental and statistical means. They may also be related to physically measurable parameters of the sound field. Early work in this field and examples of applications in experimental projects are described and discussed.

Verbal and Non-Verbal Elicitation Techniques in the Subjective Assessment of Spatial Sound Reproduction

Current research into spatial audio has shown an increasing interest in the way subjective attributes of reproduced sound are elicited from listeners. The emphasis at present is on verbal semantics, however studies suggest that non-verbal methods of elicitation could be beneficial. Research into the relative merits of these methods has found that non-verbal responses may result in different eli...

Elicitation and measurement of auditory spatial attributes in reproduced sound

This thesis has investigated objective measurements that relate to the perceived spatial attributes of reproduced sound. Research has been conducted into extant measurements that aim to quantify the perceived spatial attributes of concert hall acoustics, and those that are most likely to be successful for measuring the properties of reproduced sound have been identified. A relatively new measur...

Spatial Attribute Identification and Scaling by Repertory Grid Technique and other methods

Recording and reproduction systems are becoming capahave asked subjects to grade or rank relatively vague ble of increasingly greater sophistication in the way they expressions such as 'spaciousness', 'sense of space', represent the spatial features of sound. There arises a 'sound stage' or 'spatial impression', as reviewed in pressing need to develop advanced subjective testing Rumsey [1]. The...

Verification and correlation of attributes used for describing the spatial quality of reproduced sound

When the spatial quality of reproduced sound is to be assessed, knowledge of the dimensions forming the quality is essential since the quality is known to be multi-dimensional. The dimensions could be indicated by attributes describing them. Attributes encountered during a previous experiment are considered by a group of subjects and their responses are analysed for finding the attributes’ appl...
